"Let Me Introduce You To That 'Easier Way'..."
Let's try this exercise.

Go ahead and grab your guitar now. I’ll wait.

.

.

Got it?

If you’re not able to grab it right now, just leave this page open until you have a chance to pick it up because it’s really important you do this exercise before reading on.

(You’ll be glad you didn’t skip ahead)

Alright, so you’ve got your guitar in your hands, right?

Good.

I’m going to give you a simple little 5-note “box” to play in.

Here's a picture of where the notes are (TAB below):
Here are the individual notes written in TAB (notice we’re only using the 3 “thinnest” strings). Use the fingers I’ve indicated.

E|————————8—10—|   (use first and ring fingers on this string)
B|————8—10—————|   (use first and ring fingers on this string)
G|——9—————————|   (use middle finger on this string)
D|—————
A|———
E|——

Now, there’s no “order” you need to play these notes in

I’ve just given you your “available” notes you can play for this exercise.

Play the notes forwards.

Play them backwards.

Think about the different combinations of notes you can “jump around” to.

Just experiment.

For now though, just don’t go outside of this 5 note “box”. [Box? Yes, just trust me for now :) ].

Go ahead and practice playing these 5 notes for 30s or so. Go.

Now, here’s where it gets fun

You’re going to use your little 5-note box to play along with a "track" in just a minute.

And yes, I know you don’t know what to play.

That’s the point ;).

Just hit play on the track, and play around with the 5 notes in your “box”.

Play them in any combination. Jump around. Play soft. Play loud.

Have fun.

Again, just experiment and see what you can come up with

Just jam along with the music. Do this now. I’ll wait.

Done? How was it?

Kinda fun huh?

Did you notice that no matter what you played, it sounded reasonably good? (not perfect, but decent?)

Not really “hard” at all, is it?

I’ll bet you can do even better.

Try the exercise again. Just play the track and go. See what you can come up with this time.

Do it now. Go for it.

.

.

Cool huh? Better that time?

Now, just imagine…

What if you could do that across the whole fretboard?

You can.

And the best part?

It never gets harder than what you just did...
