It just ignited this wildly burning passion inside of me that I couldn’t get enough of.
Like music was the only thing that took me to that special place… and gave me an escape from whatever was happening in my life.
But reality was different.
I wasn’t one of those gifted or talented musicians who could just pick up the guitar and play “real” music.
Not me.
Instead, I found myself clunking around on this big, awkward plank of wood and metal… sounding mechanical and lifeless… and always feeling like I was just some guy “messing around” on the guitar.
I got advice from friends. And even took a few lessons when I was younger.
But I never made it past what I’d call that “advanced beginner” stage.
Then life got in the way...
And I didn’t have as much time to dedicate to guitar as I wanted.
And I wondered if anything would ever change.
That was until the most humiliating night of my life.
The night I completely choked in front of everyone...
And they all laughed in my face.
Every fiber in my being wanted to put down the guitar forever, and never even look at it again…
But there was a voice in my head that stopped me.

“You can either throw in the towel and give up on your dreams…”
Or... you can take the one shot you have in this life, and do something about it right now.”
I thought to myself, “You know what… music was my burning passion”...
I always wanted to be a good guitar player.
I may not have been born the most talented guy out there…
And heck, my fingers might have been stiff… or maybe even the wrong size for playing guitar…”
In fact, I previously broke my pinky on my fretting hand, which made playing terribly painful. And some notes were nearly impossible to reach.
But I thought, “You know, you’ve got a good work ethic…
And even if it is a little later in life than you’d like…

That’s when I decided to get serious about guitar.
I was going to learn how to
play lead guitar in the next 12 months...
or I was going to quit guitar for good.
After weighing my options, I figured the easiest place to start seemed to be on YouTube...
So that’s where my journey began.
And I tell you what, almost right away I felt like I was drowning in a sea of guitar gurus and technical terms and theories.
I swear, sometimes I wound up more confused on YouTube than when I started.
Most teachers seem to assume you know EVERYTHING they’re talking about. Or they talk too much... or go so fast you have to rewind a million times.
Most of the time, I had NO IDEA they were talking about.
And don’t even get me started on those teachers who just use their videos to show off.
I found you can pick up a lot of great tips from a lot of people...
But it seemed like there were “gaps” in the way most teachers taught.
I mean, I’m sure the most talented guitar players out there can “put the pieces together”…
But some of us need some extra help!
I usually wound up getting frustrated and putting the guitar down
That’s when I thought I’d do better with a more structured approach.
So I went out and bought some of the highest rated books online. And I ended up going through a few courses along the way as well.
And uhh… can you say “information overload?”
Now look, as I mentioned, I’m not the type to give up easily… especially when it’s something I really believe in...
But when it came to things like scales and keys and CAGED and all that…
It was so confusing and overwhelming!
I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to tie all the pieces of the puzzle together.
Long story short, I ended up hiring a few private teachers.
And don’t get me wrong, they were nice people…
But they never seemed to have anything planned. They usually just asked me what song I wanted to learn.
And songs are great, but I wanted to actually know what I was doing on guitar…
So I could improvise, play solos… have musical freedom to play my own things...
Not just regurgitate a crappy version of something somebody already wrote.
By that point, I just wanted to
throw my hands in the air
I’d learned all these bits and pieces. But for some reason, I just couldn’t put it all together.
When I sat down to practice, I usually wound up spinning my wheels and just wasting my time noodling.
I was getting so sick of playing the same old boring stuff and always sounding dull and lifeless…
And even sicker of feeling limited to just a few frets.
I Felt Like I Just Hit A Wall
With My Playing
Like I hit a plateau…
Like I was stuck in this rut I didn’t know how to climb out of...
And I just felt lost. Like I was wandering around in the desert.
As time went on, it got harder and harder to keep trying.
I’d see all these gurus making all these promises about becoming a “Guitar God” and magically mastering the fretboard and all that…
But by then I was so skeptical.
I mean sure, what they were teaching may have worked for some people…
But I really felt like maybe there was something wrong with me…
Like I was a defective part from the factory.
I mean, I know I wasn’t born with the most natural talent…
But did my injury really put a ceiling on how good I could get?
Why did it seem like I practiced and practiced, and learned, and really tried… yet never really progressed...
While other people just seemed to “get it” and zoom ahead without really trying?
Honestly, I got jealous when I saw other players who could just march up and down the neck without even looking…
I just wanted to rip out the strings and throw my stupid guitar across the room right then and there.
Some nights I couldn’t even sleep because I was afraid I’d never figure it all out.
I’d lie there and run through the same thoughts over and over…
“Why couldn’t I connect the dots? What am I missing? Why can’t I get over this “hump” I’m stuck on?
I was starting to come to grips with the fact that maybe being a good guitar player just wasn’t in the cards for me...
And maybe I really should just put the guitar down for good…
And try to move on without music in my life.
And Then I Got An Email

A friend of mine was the marching band director at a local university…
And she needed help setting up some equipment.
I remember walking down the halls on the way to her office and seeing people playing piano, clarinet, trumpets, and of course, playing guitar…
Just wishing I could be one of those musicians, instead of just some average guy with nothing special about him.
I couldn’t get it off my mind the whole time we talked. And as we wrapped up our chat, I blurted out…

At first, she looked at me like “You don’t belong here, you’re not a student”...
But after she thought about it for a second, she said...
There’s an instructor who teaches here at the university. He’s from Colombia, South America.
He’s almost always out of the country. And he’s really hard to get in touch with…
But…”
She paused, like she regretted bringing it up...
“If he still teaches a handful of private students, he’s always booked up.”
She knew I’d probably never talk to him, but she wrote down his personal cell number on a paper note, and handed it to me just in case.

My stomach twisted in knots over what I’d gotten myself into. And my mind spewed out all sorts of excuses not to follow through.
When a voice in the back of my mind said, “Wait… What if this could be the guy? If you never try, you’ll never know.”
So I took a deep breath… and dialed his number.
Astonishingly, he answered.
And as it turned out, he only taught 5 people...
And he had one opening.
The next week, I found myself following my GPS behind an old gas station, through a run-down neighborhood, on the way to his house.
My mind was racing…
I was thinking “What the heck did I get myself into...
I’ve taken lessons from other teachers and nothing’s worked…
Why would this be any different?
“And Now I Might Get Myself Shot?”
I was so nervous the only notes
I could hit were wrong ones…
And I couldn’t even focus on what the teacher was saying.
But I decided on 3 lessons. So I had to stick with it.
Well get this. For our second lesson…
He was over 30 minutes late!
I was so irritated I don’t even remember what we talked about that day.
On the drive home…
I’d already started thinking about how I was going to tell him I was quitting.
I secretly hoped the 3rd time would be a charm. But at that point, my expectations were in the dumpster.
At the beginning of our 3rd lesson, he printed off a sheet…
then handed it to me to look over… while he went to make some coffee, before we started.
I saw a bunch of hand-drawn charts with little scribbled dots.
And I immediately thought “Ok, this is it…
“Another confusing concept that’s going to zoom over my head and make me look like an idiot.”
I was just about to start packing my stuff…
And then it happened.
As he walked past me to leave the room…
He mentioned one thing about the number 7… at the exact moment I happened to be looking at one weird chart that ran off the fretboard...
And The Hair Stood Up
On The Back Of My Neck!
It was like my brain had 3D glasses on... where my mind was a supercomputer, rapidly sorting and sifting and scanning and connecting everything I’d learned...
Like the light bulb was flickering on for the first time…
And that’s when I saw it.
You see, I had some engineering training in college where we were taught to see patterns…
And I couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the lesson.
As soon as the lesson was over...
I raced home and mapped out the fretboard on paper like I’d done in the past… Except this time I did something I’d never thought to do before…
I added ONE extra string.
And that’s when I discovered an unusual, 7-string pattern that repeated across the entire neck.
It Was Like I Already Had 99% Of It, And This Was The Final 1% That Connected It All Together
I looked around on YouTube, and combed through the guitar forums…
I flipped back through all my guitar books, and even scanned through the courses I’d bought.
And we’d never seen this pattern anywhere before.
That’s when I knew I was onto something big.
I was so happy I gave this teacher a shot. And so thankful I stuck with it.
I felt like this was the moment I’d been waiting for. Like this could actually be the missing link I’d never been able to find…

I’d been wanting to play that way for so long, I had tears coming out of my eyes.
And I just remember thinking, “If only every guitar player out there could experience how incredible this feels!”
Not only did it open up a whole new world…
My friends, family and even coworkers were shocked
By how good I got in such a short time...
And a few of them started asking me for lessons.
Now, there was nothing special about them when they started. They were just everyday folks with normal jobs… and others who were retired.
But when I showed them what I’d discovered - even those who had been trying to figure out guitar for decades…
It was like their progress just exploded!
